Farming Section

The Society runs a number of competitions to test the farming skills of its members. Besides the Sheep Shearing and Hedgelaying Competitions, which are detailed in separate pages, there are a number of competitions held during the annual Ploughing Match. These include competitions for the best Commercial Breeds of Sheep, Native Breeds of all types of Livestock, Handling Competitions, as well as competitions for various Cereals.

There is also a separate competition for Standing Crops which is held in July of each year. In 2007 Mike Westoby took the overall prize for the highest number of points scored across all classes and came first in the Winter Wheat and Winter Oilseed Rape classes. Roy Badham also achieved two class wins with his Spring Barley and Winter Oats.
